Microsoft Word files are *binary* files. Older .doc files are Microsofts
propriatory format and .docx files are .zip archives containing .xml and other
things. You can't do a diff on these files. svn diff only makes sense on
*plain text files*, like C/C++ source code. Word processing files are not
plain text, really. Even OpenOffice / LibreOffice word processing files are
not plain text. If you want to use subversion and do source code management
of documentation, you should be using something like LaTeX or SMGL or groff
files.
Subversion probably should not be crashing though, but that is a different
issue.
