I expect someone will ask. In another forum before I directed him
here he provided the information that their proxy is IIS 7.5. So if
anyone is aware of any problems using it as proxy with the new Serf
library that would help.

AFAIK, no one has reported this specific error yet with 1.8, so not
sure if any of the existing fixes would help or not.

Using 1.7 client works fine, so clearly this is Serf related and not
related to upgrading their server to 1.8.
