And that was the winning hint ..... I unfortunately forgot the authentication rule in the httpd.conf for the svn-proxy-sync location, just had it for the "normal" access of the slave repo.

Too stupid, I know. But tata, now it works :)

Simply did not know that apache cuts out authentication details if it did anonymous access.

Are you sure the target repository doesn't allow anonymous access?

If it allows anonymous access the client will only upgrade to authentication when it needs to.
