Byte-range locking in SVN

Dear all

Can someone tell me when byte-range locking was introduced into SVN?

We are using SVN 1.6 and can see warning messages in our SVN server
/var/log/messages warning that byte-range locking is not supported in
AFS (except in the local machine). Our repositories are in AFS.

AFS is important to our current operation so it would be helpful to
understand this, what exactly is locked etc. and if there is some
alternative for AFS, or do we have to use NFS etc.

Many thanks for your help,

David Asbury
