Different client and server versions OK?

The Subversion version running on my server I fairly old, somewhere in
the 1.4 branch, I think. The server is not under my control, so I don't
get to say when it's upgraded to a more recent version.

Do I have to keep the version of the Subversion client I'm running on my
local machine in line with the server version, or is it OK to upgrade
that separately? I do realize that once a working copy is touched by a
newer version, it can't be used by an older version of Subversion, but
that's a bit different.
