Error "Could not read chunk size" when trying to merge

I am using subversion 1.5.4 on Ubuntu 9.04 und have run into
a severe problem: every attempt to merge a branch with the trunk
using
  svn merge <URLoftrunk>
in the branch working directory fails with this error message:

svn: REPORT of '/svnroot/gate/!svn/vcc/default': Could not read chunk
size: Secure connection truncated (https://gate.svn.sourceforge.net)

There seem to be rather a few reports of this error on the internet but
I have not found any applicable solutions.
However, a solution is what I desperately need!

All other subversion commands seem to work just fine, my working
directory is OK, so I wonder if this is a bug in subversion?

Cheers,
  Johann
