.ppt is a binary file, not to mention - compressed one (since Office'97).
This shouldn't be an issue, unless the file was given an erroneous mime-type.
Alternatively, I can imagine M$PP touching file without a shame.

Try set a RO attribute on freshly checked out file and open it again. Just
curious, what'd happen.
