directory missing

Occasionally I end up with a messed up WC (has to do with my externals which
point to a branch getting overwritten during an update). The result is that
I have a directory where its trying to add a file that already exists or
something of that nature. I'm trying to figure out how to "restore" an
element (either file or directory). Right now, one of my subdirectories,
which is in repository is not in my WC, and I can't figure out how to get it
back without either, doing a fresh checkout, or doing a checkout of the
subdirectory explicitly which causes it to be considered a different WC
(commands on the parent directory ignore it). Any help?
