As Ryan, points out, the last bit of discussion seems to be based on a
misunderstanding. I don't want subversion to recreate the symbolic link
when I do a check out. I only want to use the link in my working copy.
Suppose I would set up a daemon that observes two regular files and as
soon as one file changes, the daemon copies all the changes into the
other. Obviously this daemon only works on my computer, it is my own
business and not the business of subversion or the other users. Now a
symbolic link achieves exactly what this daemon would do.
In reply to some of your questions, if the target of the link goes
missing, I'd expect svn to refuse to work with the link. If I try to
open a dead link in an editor, I get scolded for that, and the same
should happen if I try to commit or update a dead link.
If you think that some of your objections remain valid after this
clarification, could you please repeat them, as I might have missed
something?
Best,
Misha
