I'm not sure how familiar you are with building from source, but you can
simply install a program or library into your home directory. Using the
typical './configure', you simply give it "--prefix=~/install". Then, you
will have to adjust PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH[1] and you're done. I installed
a very new Subversion on a very old Debian system that way, I think it was
1.5 on stable-1 or stable-2.

for 'man'.
