update incomplete

hi there,

i have checked out a repository non-recursively, and am using the command
"svn update ... " to get specific directories from the repository.

sometimes when i use the command "svn update dir" i don't get everything
inside of directory dir.

i can use "svn update dir/item" to get individual items inside of "dir" if i
happen to know what i am missing from the original update

does someone know why this happens and perhaps how to prevent it?
