Well, for some it might be not so rare like for others... :)

Yes, that's so true. I sort of got used to explorer-integration on Windows
with Tortoise(SVN|CVS|Hg), but too often the overlays are a pain! (More so
for TSVN than for the other two. Don't know why.)

I guess the same what people experience when they update and commit too
rarely while being online... :) Finally it depends to a big degree on the
overall workflow!
