I have the same issue; I've compiled 1.6.2 for a debian lenny (using the
debian source package configuration blindly), and my svn client gives
the same output when it's run from ssh session without X forwarding.

as the commit is properly made on the repository (and as it only affect
the commits made from the server, which are rare), I didn't put too much
attention on that... so, unfortunately no...
... but I'll be also happy if someone ...
