gnome-keyring error upon commit when not in X session

I am migrating our repository at the office to Subversion 1.6.2 over Apache 2.2.11. I have compiled the 1.6.2 client with --with-ssl and --with-gnome-keyring and so far it has worked like a charm within the GNOME session.

When I ssh in and attempt to commit in a terminal session, I get this error and am asked for my password:

** (process:30997): WARNING **: couldn't connect to dbus session bus: dbus-launch failed to autolaunch D-Bus session: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.

I started up a VNC session and tried the same sequence and it worked like a charm again.

From examining the dev list it seems that using this feature outside the context of an X session provokes the error. Does anyone have any more details? Can anyone propose a workaround for non-X usage?
