I think what's needed is documentation. Some apps document the
existence of the "--" switch, but svn does not. It would help if it
did. Yes, it's a Unix convention, but it's an obscure one. I've used
Unix for years before I stumbled into this, and only because I
happened to read a manpage for some command that described it.
