Windows XP issue with svn:special

I am having a problem with checking files in and out with svn on Windows XP SP 3. On the initial check in of files from my machine svn is apprently running through and determining which properties to set - which is fine, except sometimes it seems to think normal files are symbolic links and set the svn:special property to *.
For example - I have a directory that contains 5 JAR files. One JAR file gets set to svn:mime-type application/octet-stream, but the other 4 are set to svn:special *
The only thing I can find in common with these 4 JAR files is when I look at the Windows file properties. The file size is MUCH larger than the "size on disk" size (example, size 10.2 MB, size on disk: 4.00 KB). I can open these JAR files and see the contents of them just fine, but after they are checked in, the files are 0 so they can never be opened again.
