Merging a branch but symlinks are not created

Hi,
I have a problem where I'm possibly simply doing something wrong. I wanted to do the following: I created a branch from trunk and made some modifications in the branch. One of the modifications was to delete a directory and replace it with a symlink of the same name. later on I merged the branch back into head. On the command line svn wrote after the merge "skipped name_of_symlink". After having committed the merge the directory had been deleted but the symlink not created. How do i have to proceed so *every* change from the branch is after the merge in trunk.

Here a short example from the coomand line (svn version is 1.5.2)

/tmp >svn co file:///usr/local/repository/testmerge/trunk testmerge
Checked out revision 1.
/tmp >cd testmerge/
/tmp/testmerge >mkdir dir1
