Subversion hangs up on large directory checkout

Hi:
I'm using Subversion v1.4.2 with Apache 2.2 DAV on a Debian Linux
server .

When accessing the repository over a VPN link, when I try to checkout
a large directory, my client (I'm using TortoiseSVN) begins to
transfer, creates the .svn directory but then simply hangs up, stop
responding without any response.
Small directories no problems, and when browsing the repository using
IE also no problem.

I found some users/links with the similar/same problems but none of
the solutions suggested worked: increasing apache timeouts, MTU
sizes, disabling tcp windowing, ...

None of these problems occurred when using the LAN.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Ruy
