hotcopy fails because strings file > 2Gb

I found plenty on the mailing list about the ...

hotcopy fails because .../db/strings file > 2Gb problem

The FAQ says that the problem has been fixed, but it only works on
Linux. I'm on Solaris 10 running svnadmin version 1.4.5 and Apache
2.0.55. I believe I have the fix, but hotcopy still doesn't work. Do
I have to abandon hotcopy and use some other method of backup?
