svnadmin upgrade

Hi devs,

if I understand correctly, the repostiories are not upgraded, until I run
"svnadmin upgrade". After that server will start adding mergeinfo to
repository as required, right? But, does this mergeinfo only affect
revisions after the upgrade, or does it mess with history as well - in
other words, will the upgrade affect my incremental backup, or not (do I
need to recreate old backup files)?
