my dump files are twice as big than a CD at the moment.

And you are right that total file size is the main point concerning
corruption likelihood in case of a SVN repo.

I think your proposal to keep many hotcopies in various locations is the
best approach. I'll skip the SVN dumps from now on.

P.S.:
I still have hope to recover the data from my failed hard disc. There is a
chance that it was a controller issue only and the disc is still fine. At
least there is a chance that I can extract the original backup from
another disc.
