The most expedient way to fix this is to add the RPMForge Yum repository:

and install Subversion 1.4.6 on both of those releases. It is a bad idea to
share working copies for exactly the reason you have come up against. If you
upgrade the server to 1.4.6 as well, you will also gain a number of performance
improvements since pre-1.4.x days.

I suspect there will be very little interest in adding a config option to
lobotomize the newer client code.
