checking out a source tree from CVS and checking into subversion in parallel and maintaining them in this way

I'd like to use the source base from an open source project to pull into my
IDE. I'd like to check this source tree into my own Subversion server.
This way I can keep up with the changes made to the open source project but
make my own changes to the source and maintain in my own repository for
version control as I don't have commit privilage to the open source CVS
tree.

is this possible or will the subversion client/server be confused by the CVS
directories and controle files ?

Please advise.
