Generally, it is okay for a thread to split into multiple topics.
Often, a subthread about a slightly different topic gets its subject
line changed (without being forked into an entirely new thread), for
example:
<http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.subversion.devel/100663/focus=100767>.

However, in this case we are not on the wrong thread but on the wrong
list. :) Discussions about patches, implementation questions, etc. all
belong on the dev@ list.
