Via the externals mechanism.
It allows you to sort of link a directory to another part of the
repository or even another repository.
It is a bit awkward to use at first, but so are Clearcase config specs.
Look up the Externals Definition chapter in the svnbook for more
information.

how can one as a former Clearcase user and a newbee to subversion

clearcase's config specs in subversion?
I understand that Clearcase allows for a whole hierachy of labels to
define a certain build specification. How can this be reproduced with
svn?
I am not a Clearcase user myself, just want to convince one to not to be
too afraid of svn... ;)
