clobber check

i have a number of directories each containing subdirs (cells) and at
the lowest level some binary data. my goal is to merge these
directories without "clobbering" any cells with the same name. whats
the best way to determine if i have any pre-existing cells prior to a
commit? i'd prefer to manually examine which version i actually want
in the repository rather than committing everything and figuring it
out later.
