I don't see how anything can help until you understand that you need to
get your own lock _before_ working on a file where changes won't merge.

No, you just need to get the lock. Nothing else is going to be able to
guess what you are about to do and advise you how to go about it.

Maybe it should pop up some photos of your co-workers to remind you that
other people are involved...
