Symfony can actually be installed using pear but svn is also an option.
Naturally, if you want an svn install of symfony, that means learning
the basics of subversion.

The svnbook.org pointed out by Erik Huelsmann is a great resource do
check it out.
Once you're familiar with svn basics, you'd want to constantly remind
yourself on how to use the commands by referring to this cheatsheet:
http://ariejan.net/svncheatsheet/
or using "svn help commit" where you want to check for the syntax of
doing svn commit.
