Once more about a texinfo manual

I asked here if there was a texinfo manual available anywhere and
"Andy Levy" reponded in:
Message-ID: <b26be6d90801031307s344aa802r769c6ef7a4bb93dc_at_mail.gmail.com>

Manual (1.4) sources (linked from the front page of svnbook.org):
http://svnbook.red-bean.com/trac/browser/tags/en-1.4-final/src/en/book/

DocBook tool for converting to Texinfo linked here:
  http://wiki.docbook.org/topic/DocBookPublishingTools

So I followed up on those links downloaded the tools and gave it a
try. All I get are massive piles of warnings and zero length *.texi
files with commands like:

   docbook2texi ch02-basic-usage.xml

It appears one would need to be very conversant in both docbook and
texinfo to have any chance of understanding the error output.

Can anyone verify that this can actually be made to work? Or maybe a
push toward some walkthru or kindergarteners HOWTO.

I followed up the online manuals for the tools in docbook2X but they
really just tell you that the above command is supposed to work.
