Updating isn't required; you could also do 'svn log -rHEAD'. But I
agree, it is a confusing UI convention. Unfortunately, ISTR that the
last time we discussed changing it, unexpected problems cropped up
that made it a non-trivial change (I'm too lazy to find that therad in
the archives now).
