All of my users are on a LAN (or fast WAN) but there's no way I would want
even a 10% of them to be querying the service every minute.

The additional load this would produce would be ridiculous - it might be
fair enough to have this kind of functionality enabled in a small
development organisation but not in large scale enterprises.
