svn: attempt to write a readonly database

I'm getting a strange message each time I commit to a particular repository.

svn: MERGE request failed on '/svn/named/trunk'
svn: attempt to write a readonly database
svn: Your commit message was left in a temporary file:
svn: '/var/named/svn-commit.tmp'

The permissions on the repository seem to be the same as all the others,
which work. If I then run svnadmin recover on the repository, the
commit then works and attempting it again gives:

svn: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: Your file or directory 'named.conf' is probably out-of-date
svn: The version resource does not correspond to the resource within the
transaction. Either the requested version resource is out of date
(needs to be updated), or the requested version resource is newer than
the transaction root (restart the commit).

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Cliff.
