The first step is to find out what distribution of Linux your server
is running and then what version it is at. This will make a big
difference in what installation you can/should use. Also, do you have
full root access to the box? I'm not sure that you would be able to
run over http if you don't have the ability to mess with apache
configuration files.

In order to have subversion serve out over http:// you have to use the
mod_dav_svn module. The standard mod_dav doesn't really get you any
closer to getting subversion up and going.
