I've never built on Solaris 10, and I don't think I've gotten that
error. But I know when I was building 1.4.4 on Solaris 9, I needed to
ensure that all the build scripts were forced to building shared
libraries. I think one of the subprojects assumes, if it's not told
to enable shared, that static libs are available for linking.

So, whenever I run configure, I always include the --enable-shared=yes
option on Solaris.
