cli merge tracking howto?

Hi, I sent a request a few weeks ago to dev@ asking for a howto on
CLI (command line interface) "merge tracking", instead I was referred
to this GUI tool over and over.

Can I ask again, is there a howto/primer/doc/little-piece-of-help one
can point me at explaining how to do merge tracking via the command
line?

Is it possible? Or is this gui thing required?
