Storing the repository revision in the repo?

Hi,
how can one store the repository version
(http://subversion.tigris.org/faq.html#version-value-in-source) in the
repo? svnversion is quite nice, but doesn't work if the contents of
the repo are distributed as a tarball and the receiver doesn't have
svn installed...

Obviously a pre-commit hook is out of the question, but could this be
done by a post-commit hook? I.e. can a post-commit start a new
transaction?

Best
   Martin
