I am thinking it is a permission problem, but I can not tell...

I am running my svn server using the svn user. Are there any reasons NOT to run the server as root?

 nohup otherscript > /dev/null &

should do it (not tested, though). But I don't think that is the real
problem, since I update local/remote WC's all the time in post-commit...
