Mainly to save space and to ease the time and space requirement of backups.

Some files (and programs) are no longer of any use to us so we would
like to purge all traces of them. Some files we are required by law to
purge. Some programs have gone through a massive rewrite and are for
all practical purposes new programs therefore we no longer need the
older version.
