help, svn command line authentication not working

Hi, Question, why would providing a password on the svn command line
work, but entering the password interactively when prompted not work?

Subversion server is using apache with mod_ldap for authentication, and
when doing a "svn ci" on a remote node, it prompts for a password but
even though I provide the correct password it fails authentication.
However if I use the --password argument and provide the password there,
it works fine (and then proceeds to cache the password as per normal).

So Why does the interactive password not work? NB all windows
subversion clients work fine.

All responses much appreciated. Thanks!

- Andy

NB Subversion version 1.4.4, apache 2.0.59, running on HPUX 11.23 ia64
all compiled by me (with great difficulty I might add).
