svn export and external links

I've been working on plugging an svn managed project into our build system,
and use svn export to create the sources used to build the binaries.

One of the svn repositories has an external link, but that isn't followed when
using svn export. Would this be a bug? Anyone know a work around that
doesn't destroy the original checkout?
