Yeah, I wouldn't have bumped except that it looks like I dropped into
the middle of a lively discussion about recovery tools and was afraid
that I'd get pushed too far down too quickly to expect a reply. I did
search a bit, but keep coming back to tags = branches, neither of which
I want, plus several of the older threads that I found are actually
broken. "Next in thread" often goes to a completely different thread or
even gets an error message. I'll check the other archive to see if it's
more fruitful.

Symbolic names have long been discussed here. I would spend some more
time going through the archives. http://svn.haxx.se/ is a good place
