Oh, and some more data to make it more puzzling:

* "svn log" in a different wc -- which is pointing to a different
  machine, also via svn+ssh -- works fine. So it's not the case that
  (for example) "svn log" over svn+ssh is totally broken.

* "svn log svn+ssh://localhost/path/to/repos" on the server machine --
  looking at itself, as it were -- works fine.

We can say that the universe consists of a substance, and this
substance we will call "atoms," or else we will call it
"monads."  Democritus called it atoms.  Leibniz called it
monads.  Fortunately, the two men never met, or there would have
been a very dull argument.
