public/private repos access

hi..

another weird question.. i have a private repos, requiring user/passwd
access. i can access it via tortoise. when i try to access it using the
linux 'svn list' function, svn hangs, and is apparently in some sort of
waiting state.

i'm using:
 svn list --username mark --password foo http://foo.com/svn/mda

this works from the windows tortoise client app...

any thoughts? any idea/pointers to log files i might be able to check to see
what the problem might be.
