Getting rid of VSS should be a given, no matter what you replace it with.
Your data is at risk while you stay with it. It's a closed system, not
maintained, and fragile.

Go for a system that's open, actively maintained, and robust. Look for one
used by its developers, so they have an incentive to make it the best it
can be. (Hey, Subversion fits those requirements! But there are other
candidates, as well.)
