I've installed Subversion on Ubuntu 6.10 by invoking:
$ sudo apt-get install subversion

I used the following as inspiration, but you may find some better/more
suitable sources on the web:
http://www.urbanpuddle.com/articles/2006/05/03/setting-up-subversion-on-ubuntu-dapper-drake

I then configured Apache to be the host/interface, as per this following
source (even though it's for Gentoo, it's close enough):
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Apache2_with_subversion_SVN_and_DAV

...which involves invoking:
$ sudo apt-get install libapache2-svn

...and editing the Apache configuration file.
