performances problem with working copy on remote server

Hi all,
I'm asking for an advice/experience using the working copy on
a linux server on a lan for linux and windows clients.

I made a little test and a simple svn st which takes 0.2 sec on a local
copy (at 2nd run) takes about 30 sec on a samba mounted (mount.smb,
default options) filesystem.

There are about 4000 file (total size ~ 50MB) in 800 directories in
the wc. I think the reason lies in the filesystem cache but I'm not
sure.

Do you have any advice for choosing cifs, smb or nfs, mounting option or
subversion configuration that could improve performances?

Or simply the subversion wc filesystem usage patterns aren't suited for
network drives?

Thanks in advance,
Daniele P.
