Ok here's an attempt to justify the suggestion

We use TortoiseSVN for version control, and a Windows based editor, but
the build environment is cygwin. Surely that's not an unusual
configuration?

So along comes an automated checkout-and-build script (for a nightly
build, or automated release). Now the SVN checkout will occur in the
Cygwin environment whereas the files were usually added with Tortoise,
hence my problem.

Still I'm perfectly happy with my workaround, you only have to do it once.
