partial svn checkouts over http:// without error ?

we have some large repos (a few hundred megs) exported over http://
and svn:// and when checking out via svn://, it completes
successfully. but when checking out over http://, the download will
stop midway without any error ... the exit status is 0, no error is
displayed, it looks like the client svn thinks things worked properly.
 has anyone else experienced this ?
