Convert repository to older version?

Hi all,

I am stuck with a somewhat unusual problem: while evaluating subversion
for use in our team I started using it locally for my own development
issues. Now our IT department has installed and configured svnserve as a
subversion server for us, but unfortunately they used an older version,
1.3.2 for their own reasons.

The newer clients and TortoiseSVN can work with the older server well
enough, but now I cannot access my repository anymore. I get the
following error message:
"Error * Expected format '3' of repository; found format '5'"

After reading some release notes I found out that in version 1.4, both
the client side and the server repository changed formats.

Now I would like to transfer my own repository including it's history
information into the new one, but don't quite know where to start. I can
still access the old repository by starting a server daemon locally, but
am somewhat reluctant to just go ahead and try something. I'm afraid I
might lose some data on the way if I'm not careful.

If someone can point me to the right chapters in the subversion book (or
better yet, within the tortoise documentation which is a bit closer to
the windows user level) that would be fine. I did find some info so far,
but never found any hints as to the possible effects of switching to an
older repository format.

Thanks,
Stefan

P.S.: I did try searching the forum, but couldn't locate a topic dealing
with backward conversion (I might have used the wrong search pattern
though)
