Improving performance of Subversion using caching proxy

I've been messing around with trying to get squid to cache large
checkouts without much luck. Squid is caching fine(tested w/IE), but
it does not help performance of Subversion.

We have large files (compared to bandwidth) under Subversion and I
would like to see these files cached on the squid proxy server across
branches if at all possible.

Any alternatives to improve checkout performance?

Some articles that basically conclude that using a caching proxy to
improve performance of Subversion is a non-starter:
